Mrs. Lillie Mae Rath Funeral at Bladen

Mrs. Edward Rath, 83, passed away Tuesday morning at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Kenneth Williams of Bayard. The body was taken to Wednesday to Bladen, Nebr., where funeral services are being conducted at 2:00 o’clock Thursday, today, at the methodist church, after which burial will take place in the East Lawn cemetery at Bade (sp. Bladen).

Lillie Mae Rath was born May 5, 1872, the first white child to be born in Clay County, Nebr., the daughter of Albert and Mary Jane Herrick. At Ong, Nebr., she was married to Edward Rath on October 5, 1891. He passed away some years ago. Mrs. Rath had lived in this area for the past twenty-five years, and at Bade Nebr., for the thirty years preceding. She was a member of the Bladen Congregational church.

Surviving are four daughters: Mrs. Vernon Houtz of Naponee, Nebr., Elva Tillman of Denver, Colo., Frances Williams of Bayard and Edith Turner of Curtis, Nebr., and one son Floyd L. Rath of Bayard. There are also 23 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, two sisters, Anna Rath of Woodlake, Nebr., and Mary King of Edgar, Nebr., and four brothers, John Herrick of Burwell, Nebr., Will and Albert of Ong and Charles whose home is in Massachusetts. One son and one daughter preceded her in death.

Funeral services for Mrs. Blanche Anna Houtz, a teacher in the Naponee school system for many years, were held at 2:00 P.M. Monday, October 23, at the United Church of Christ in Naponee. Mrs. Houtz passed away Friday afternoon, October 20 at the Franklin County Memorial Hospital, where she has been confined for approximately three weeks. She was 75 years of age.

Blanche Anna Rath, daughter of Edward and Lillie (Herrick) Rath, was bon August 12, 1897 at Sutton. She attended school at Bladen, and later graduated from Kearney State Teachers College.

She was married to Walter Vernon Houtz at Bladen on June 9, 1920 and they made their home in Naponee. She was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon on December 26, 1970.

Mrs. Houtz was a member of the United Church of Christ in Naponee, the MHW Club and American Legion Auxiliary Post 364 in Naponee.

She is survived by three sons, Dale of Waldorf, Md., Marvin of Yankton, S.D. and Dean of Kansas City, Kans.; three sisters, Mrs. Elva Tillman of Denver, Colo., Mrs. Frances Williams of Bayard, Nebr., and Mrs. Edith Turner of Curtis, Nebr. and eight grandchildren.

Her parents, two brothers and a sister also preceded her in death.

Rev. Herbert Kelly, pastor of the United Church of Christ in Franklin and Naponee, officiated at the services Monday afternoon. Interment was made at the Naponee cemetery. Hutchins Funeral Home of Franklin, was in charge of the arrangements. Serving as pallbearers were Lawrence Wohleb, Wendell Godeken, Charles Harrison, Robert Romjue, Francis Post and Charles Way.
