Tillman Surname and our Direct Line (in Bold)
The Tillman surname can be traced back to British royalty, back to William the Conqueror, through Christopher Tillman’s wife Anna Sanders. They lived in the Parish of Selling, Faversham Hundred. Christopher and Anna had two children, Isaac and Christopher, born 1600. (1) Christopher married Ruth Devonshire, sold Rhodes Court in Kent, England, and emigrated to Virginia on May 9, 1635. (2) They had three children: Roger, John and Gideon, birth date unknown, born in Accomac County, Virginia. (1) He married Margaret Manen or Maneux on February 15, 1680 or 1681. They purchased at least 1,000 acres of land near Accomac County and Somerset County, Maryland, and lived on his plantation “Tilghman’s Adventure” (1) (3)They had seven children: Solomon, Elinor, John Stephen, Moses, Elizabeth, Joseph, Gideon(II), born 1682. Gideon II’s wife’s name is unknown. They had 14 children: John B., Aaron, Anne, Nehemiah, Margaret, Eleanor, Elizabeth, Sarah, Gideon, Stephen Holland, Tabitha, Joseph, and William Elisha, born unknown date in Somerset, Maryland. He was a Captain in the Revolutionary War. (1) He married Esther Holland and had six children: Joseph R., Micael, Sandord, Georgia, Jesse, and Daniel, born date unknown in Dodds County, North Carolina. He married Sarah Harris and at some point moved to South Carolina, then Mississippi. In the war of 1812 Mr. Daniel Tillman served with Borrows’ Company, 16th Mississippi Militia. (1) They had seven children: Robert B., John, Francis, George, Sarah, Amanda, and Haden, born 1774. Haden settled in Claiborne County, Mississippi and his wife’s name is unknown. He had three children: James Alfred, Malachi, and George K, born Oct. 5, 1802 in Georgia. He married Sarah Hollingsworth in 1825 and they had seven children: Issac L., Melissa A., James R., Pernicy M., R. Lafayette, George L., and John Francis Haden, born September 10, 1842. John Francis Haden married Martha Ann Sandifer, born 1850, and they had one child, Oscar Joseph, born 1873. (1) He married Alice May Wainwright, and they had one child, Elmer Hayden, born 1898. Elmer married Elva Amelia Rath.

- The time of his arrival in Virginia is listed in Greer’s “Early Emigrants to Virginia”, and “Patents of Virginia”, May 9, 1635. In the “Visitation of Kent”, is shown the fact that Christopher Tilghman came into possession of Rhodes Court, formerly owned by Thomas Bealde, and that Christopher sold this estate to Thomas Carter. The Court is described as being a Manor situated in the Southeast extremity of the Parish of Selling, in the borough of Rhodes. Selling and Boughton are two parishes on the South or oipposite side of the London road.
- Records of the Eastern Shore of Virginia show that he was living November 22, 1665, in Accomac County, and on that date designated one Thomas Clark to be his attorney in Virginia and maryland. On Apr. 1, 1669, Gideon Tilghman purchased more than 100 acres of land from Edward Lunn, known as “Golden Quarter”, and ran “from a marked pine upon Back Creek on up that creek”. Later Gideon Tilghman made other land purchases which he named: “Tilghman’s Adventure,” “Tilghman’s Care, 2 “Pool Shape”, “Small Hopes”, “Dale’s Adventure”, and “Gideon’s Luck”. In “Sidelights of Maryland History”, Page 448, by Richardson, it is astated that Gideon Tilghman owned 1,000 acres of land in Somerset County, Maryland, which he acquired between 1682 and 1720. The records at Princess Anne, Maryland, show that he m. February 15, 1681.
Rath Surname
The Raths can be traced back to two other surnames, the first one is McMillan. Daniel McMillan and Rebecca Rosita Brown had a daughter, Mary Jane McMillan, born October 29, 1847, in Boonesborough, Iowa. She married Albert Herrick, the second surname before Rath. Albert Herrick was born June 16, 1830. Their marriage date was May 15, 1866. They had 9 children: Charles, Albert, Will, Mary, John, Emma, Amelia, Anna, and Lillie Mae, born May 7, 1872 in Sutton, Nebraska. She married Edward Rath, born February 9, 1870, in Downers Grove, Illinois. His parents were Jacob Rath and Mary, surname unknown. Lillie Mae and Edward had six children: Blanche, Frances, Glenda, Floyd, Edith, and Elva Amelia, who was born August 8, 1900 in Bladen, Nebraska. Elva married Elmer Hayden Tillman, born September 28, 1898 in Memphis, Tennessee. They had five children: Paul, Dean, Dale, Dortha and Glenda.(1)
